Morgane Tschiember is an artist: not only a painter, not only a photographer, video-maker or sculptor, but all these at one and the same time…

The work of Morgane Tschiember

Work in progress. Or “under construction”. Construction is, in fact, a good way of entering into a discussion of Morgane Tschiember’s work (…). Under construction, because it has to do with matter, materials, their qualities, condition, what happens to them, what transforms them. Under construction, because her work is rough, raw, almost brutal, and uses, or will use, materials and forms specific to the building trade: concrete, glass, metal, insulating foam, brick, floors, walls, ceilings… Under construction, because she creates works that are open, searching in all directions, pushing upwards like plants, or constructions that are wild but determined at the same time, attempting everything, both possible and impossible. Under construction, because each experiment with a shape or materials calls up another, and nothing has a definite end.

Under construction, because her work is both strong and fragile, because she conducts her research, her experiments, like protocols, with great rigour, the determination of an adventurer daring to mix oil paint and water-based paint in her Rolls; working with soft clays which will become hard and brittle, like the ceramic of the Shibari, trussed up like sensual flesh as per principles learnt from a Japanese master in bondage; cramming ceramic material into foam which will burn up when heated, making the mould melt and amalgamate with the shape it creates; searching for an unimaginable alliance between opposing states of matter. Very great rigour, though combined with an acceptance of accidents, chance, which – as in pure research – very often leads to unimagined discoveries.

More and more clearly, it seems that Morgane Tschiember’s work is organized like a system, complex, with ramifications, taking, to paraphrase Borgesian terminology, “roads with paths that branch out”.

Empirical and material, her work is deeply anchored in a down-to-earth dimension, very physical, creating a sort of permanent body-to-body confrontation with the material at its centre, leaving traces of “doing”, the gestures, voluntarily visible in her works, showing both the production process but also the trace of her own body. The imprint of her breath, for instance, materialized in Bubbles, where blown glass flows into soft, hyper-sensual forms on highly architectural metal structures. Or the Rolls which retain the trace of that impossible mixture, confined within an organized combat, of oil and water.

This connection with the world – getting her hands dirty, as one might say, as she always insists on doing things herself rather than delegating the process of the work’s producton to anyone else – is, however, physical to the point of being metaphysical. It is a dynamic system in which movement functions constantly, in which it is, obsessively, a matter of transformation, thresholds, the passage from one state to another: the raw material of her Bubbles goes from a state of sand to that of liquid in blown fusion, then glass in soft, organic shapes. It will again become sand in the entropy landscape of Pow(d)er.

And it will become concrete in strange new forms that have just appeared in the artist’s studio, poured into cardboard moulds, and very hard to describe: monumental and collapsed at one and the same time, they are like foreign bodies, both meteorites fallen from the sky and pieces of petrified bodies in a rough, grey material.
